Samourai Wallet Founders Arrested Following Tornado Cash

On Wednesday, federal prosecutors charged Samourai Wallet founders Keonne Rodriguez and William Lonergan Hill with conspiracy to commit money laundering. U.S. authorities have blocked access to the Samourai Wallet website and mobile application. The arrest of Samourai’s founders follows the arrest of the founders of Tornado Cash, an Ethereum-based mixer protocol. In both cases, DOJ prosecutors argued that profiting from the intentional use of mixer services by criminals is sufficient for charges of money laundering. Industry advocacy groups have presented defenses aimed at protecting the free speech rights of open-source developers.
